La Voûte Nubienne

Other countries

Currently present in 7 West African countries, AVN's aim is to spread the Nubian vault technique in all countries where it is adapted, with a focus on countries in the Sudano-Sahelian band.

AVN is regularly approached by various stakeholders interested in the advantages of Nubian vault technology and keen to develop this concept in their countries. AVN therefore studies the various proposals and responds to them based on their relevance to the association's strategic guidelines.

During the 2016-2017 season, discussions were initiated with :

Sudan

In 2016, AVN signed a contract with the National Forest Corporation to study the feasibility of the AVN program in Sudan, funded by AFD's Proparco. As part of their program to develop the gum arabic industry, a key resource for the country, Sudan is looking for housing solutions that avoid the cutting of acacia wood, used for roofing ;

Chad

the Coopérative des professionnels du bâtiment et des travaux publics (COOPBT) in Chad made a formal request to AVN to act as a training operator and promoter of adapted Nubian vault housing. This led to a meeting with the Minister of Economy and Development Planning to initiate a request for accreditation of AVN as an international NGO in Chad.

Discussions were also held with organizations in Kenya, Morocco, Togo and Tanzania. Note: isolated constructions had already been completed in northern Togo and central Côte d'Ivoire. AVN is currently working to structure its intervention strategy in new countries, presenting different intervention modalities (opening of an AVN office in the country, deployment of the program by a local NGO with AVN support, deployment of the program with construction and training players, etc.).

The AVN network

AVN leads a network of all Nubian Vault partners, a collective of committed organsiations working together to promote this sustainable construction technique. The aim is to create a dynamic of exchange and sharing between partners to strengthen their capacities and accelerate the deployment of the Nubian Vault in the regions concerned.

AVN à la Sudan International Education Conference 2020 | La Voûte Nubienne

2020-02-03

AVN at the Sudan International Education Conference

From January 25 to 27, 2020, Mathieu Hardy represented AVN at the SIEC 2020 (Sudan International Education Conference) in Sudan. Co-organized by the World Bank, the European Union, UNICEF and the Sudanese Ministry of Education, the objective of this conference was to bring the main stakeholders in the sector to identify priorities for the transformation of the Sudanese education system and to propose a collaborative process for the development of new policies and actions contributing to such changes.

AVN’s experience in the Western Sahel over the past twenty years has been presented as a case study. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of the evolution of constructive practices towards more sustainability and accessibility. This evolution is now mandatory in response of the current environmental and climatic crises and the massive needs in terms of housing and basic infrastructure that the Sahel is currently facing.
